UPDATE ON ALDI IN TORONTO

A revision to the Development Application for an Aldi store on the Frith’s site in Toronto was lodged with Lake Macquarie City Council on 1 August 2008. This was done following extensive consultation with Council over the 18 months that this application has been before Council. The principal change has been the retention of the existing pedestrian walkway between The Boulevarde and Hinton Lane. Additional consideration has also been given to pedestrian safety issues in the car park and compliance with Council’s car parking code.

The application has now been called up before Council and the Applicant, Mr Hill understands that these revisions have the support of the Mayor and Councillors with the expectation that the Development Application will be approved when it comes up for consideration before Council in October 2008.

Recent publicity in the press following the results of the ACCC inquiry into grocery pricing indicated the benefits competition from an Aldi store brings to lowering the prices of the retail giants Coles and Woolworths. Toronto Chamber President Kelly Hoare said an Aldi store in Toronto will greatly benefit consumers and that the Chamber fully supports this Development Application which is expected to be a catalyst for a resurgence of retail activity in Toronto.
